Greener Home Cleaning: What Does EU Ecolabel Really Mean?

Does the word “natural” guarantee a better cleaner?

No. Terms such as “green” and “natural”, or green-coloured packaging, do not by themselves show a product's environmental impact. Evaluate the actual formula, intended use, manufacturer information, proper dosing and independent certifications.

What is EU Ecolabel?

EU Ecolabel is the official European Union environmental label. Different categories of cleaning products have their own criteria, including restrictions on certain hazardous substances, resource use, packaging and product performance. It does not mean a certified cleaner is completely risk-free. Certification is granted to a specific product, not automatically to every item from a brand.

How can you compare two cleaners?

  1. Intended use. Choose a cleaner appropriate for the surface and task.
  2. Dosing. Compare how much product is needed for each cleaning job or wash.
  3. Ingredients. Read manufacturer instructions and relevant allergen disclosures.
  4. Packaging. Consider recyclability and availability of refills.
  5. Independent checks. Verify EU Ecolabel or another recognized mark for the exact item.

Does greener automatically mean safe?

No. Even more environmentally considerate cleaners can irritate skin or eyes. Keep them away from children, avoid using them on unsuitable surfaces and never mix different cleaning products.
