Why does chlorine bleach require special care?
Some household products contain sodium hypochlorite, a chlorine-based bleaching agent. Used as directed, such products can be suitable for specific cleaning tasks. They must always be used according to their labels: increasing the amount or improvising combinations does not make cleaning safer.
What must never be mixed with bleach?
Never mix chlorine bleach with vinegar, acidic bathroom or toilet cleaners, ammonia-containing products or any other cleaning product. Certain combinations can release hazardous gases that irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Only use cleaning products in the ways their manufacturers specify.
Is disinfecting always necessary?
Not always. Ordinary dirt, dust and grease can often be removed with an appropriate cleaner and physical cleaning. Disinfection has a separate purpose and requires products intended for that use, applied according to their directions.
Practical cleaning safety rules
- Read the label, warnings and instructions.
- Ventilate the area, particularly when using strong-smelling cleaners.
- Wear protective gloves when the product label recommends them.
- Store cleaners in their original, closed containers out of children's reach.
- Never mix cleaning products, including two different so-called “eco” cleaners.
